European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
