Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors will gain the right to contest certain decisions from the official, following the system currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
